Issues with her Landlord–Letter Home–Marion Nov. 1, 1920

Sunday 6:30

Dear Mother and all,

Got your letter Fri. and was glad to hear about your little trip. I take it that you are feeling better. Did Louise keep house? I was glad you sent me Marion’s [this must be another Marion] address because I had planned to get in touch with her yesterday when I went up to the big city. I took so much of the time shopping last week (we only shopped til 12) that Miss Orvis [a housemate of Marion’s in Millville] didn’t have time to get

half her things and so wanted to go up again this week and so I felt that I would have to go. I bought a real cute new hat and thought I’d get some stuff for curtains in my room and try and fix it up a little, its so hopeless–all bed you know, red rug with figurines in it that come up and hit you in the face. Got cheesecloth and am going to dye it delf blue with Tintex and put silk oval patches on it like those in the Sept. Ladies Home Journal. They’re darling and will modernize things a

little bit. I can’t imagine what dear Mrs.[Marion’s landlord] will say when she knows what I’m going to do. She’s the closest tightest narrowest woman that ever lived (though she has all the money she’ll ever need) and its an experience never to be forgotten– living with her. Something new every day. Miss Orvis bought a very good looking library table for her room a few weeks ago. So last week we left the house for Philadel. Mrs. M. called her back and wanted to know if she was going to buy any new furniture–she just wanted to tell her that she didn’t want any more furniture brought into the house! And so it goes.

I had a letter from Lucy Grant this week and she is teaching at Swedesboro not far from here. I was so surprised. It's dandy, though, and we're going to try and meet and go into Philadel to-gether. I tried twice to get Marion yesterday, but she was out both times. Am going to write to her. I've written Aunt Lill that I was going there for Thanksgiving. If I do go, I'm going to try to do some sewing.

It would be fun to spend Thanksgiving in N.Y. to be sure, but I've seen nothing of an invitation.[Is this referring to a suitor?] Haven't even heard from Ralph in ages. Maybe I'll hear from Mr. Champion seeing he has my address.

Have been to church this a.m. and going tonight and this afternoon we've been for a long walk in the country. Holly is very plentiful around here. Imagine most the 1st of Nov. and I wore only xxx dress and scarf. It's been cold enough this week to wear warm coats but this is the first week we've needed coats at all in the daytime.

I haven't seen my little purple apron since I let Louise take it to Marjorie's. I need a little one like that so if it's around will you please send it. Have you told Delporte that my watch came and asked about the price? Please do it as you have a chance.

Sorry about the Convention, but maybe I could manage Washington. When does Uncle Frank come? Where is the Convention?

Write when you get a chance, What was the matter that Bet was homesick. Why don't you drive down and see me? I might wish for joy, but not for homesickness. I don't have a chance for that.

Lots of love,

Marion

Our boarding place is lovely. No school this Thurs. and Fri. Teachers Institute

Editor's notes

I can't envision what Marion is going to do to her carpet or how you dye something that is red "delf" blue. But if The Ladies Home Journal advises it, Im sure it will be beautiful!

This is the first time a family member has actually mentioned Betty's "homesickness" out loud. I find it interesting that both of these women, out in the world, are so in need of their mother writing and visiting.
