My dear Sue,

Your good letter was gladly received this noon. These days are pleasant but lonesome. Can hardly explain myself! Its next to impossible to put any enthusiasm into my canvas and whether its entirely my fault or a result in part of conditions I hardly know. I haven’t come even near getting an order today.

Don’t suppose ‘I’m discouraged but it’s tough going. Must not complain. Would like to come home this weekend and get a fresh start but I must stick out. Hope you were not really serious about being away from home when I return.

I had a letter from Columbia Rope Company before I left home stating that they had made arrangements for their calendars

Just after I had begun to work this morning I discovered a flat rear tire. A nail had gone in full length. I took tire to vulcanizing plant and am also having two bad places in my spare tire fixed. The car is in garage tonight and am going to have brakes re-lined. Have ben looking over my map and as I cant get out of here until about noon I’m thinking I’ll get home for Sunday. Hope you will not be too much disappointed. Will go down to Virgil, Marathon and a few small towns. If I were sure Lill and Vic would want to go to Lenards Sat. night I would try to get home Friday night. I have to go to Brookfield and Lenardsville. Could start early Saturday morning.

Will probably be in Marathon Friday a.m.

Love for each,

John

Editor's notes

If you're new to this project, please consider going to our site and catching up with a few letters from the 1900-1910 era. The letters only take 3-5 minutes to read and you'll find the characters more fully develop if you read the letters chronologically.

John has excellent handwriting. However, in some instances, I cant decipher it. If I can't, I simply mark the spot with "xxx"s to signify thank the word isn't decipherable.
